Over the weekend I hosted my BlogTalkRadio Show The Spiritual Book Club. This month was “The Laws of Spirit” by Dan Millman. It was a wonderful book but the one law that resonated with me the deepest, especially at this time of year, was the law of presence.
The law was taught by a cat. Here is a quote from the book that I love! “Time is a paradox, stretching between a “past” and “future” that have no reality except in our own minds. The idea of time is a convention of thought and language, a social agreement. Here is the deeper truth: We have only this moment.”
As the owner of 2 cats, I can attest that cats are masters of being in the moment.
The holiday season can be filled with things to do, people to see, lists, command appearances at family events and lots of stress! Being present to the joy in each moment will help you prioritize how you spend your time and focus on the positive in each moment. It is hard to be hurt about a past event or worry about the future if you are celebrating the present.
If you have ever observed a cat, they are calm and unworried about anything. They know that all will be taken care of for them. They play and nap with equal passion.
As promised here are three tips for staying present in your daily life and being passionate about each moment!
1) Breathe….. Our breath is our connection to all of life. If we are nervous we breathe faster, when we are anxious we breathe shallow. We can use our breath to pull ourselves back into our bodies. Try it….take a deep breath so that your belly expands. Then exhale through your mouth pushing the air out of your body Do this 3 times any time you feel like you are worrying or stressing out.
2) Hug a tree. I know, this sounds cliché but really anytime we connect to the earth we cannot help but be present to that moment. A tree has deep roots into the earth and grows in place. Everything it needs comes to it. A tree does not worry about the squirrel that lives in its branches or if it will rain. It trusts that all is as it should be and pulls its nourishment from its connection to earth. You can use the tree’s connection to earth to ground yourself.
3) Find a touch stone. I use a palm sized piece of desert rose selenite. The earthy color and grounding energy of the stone helps me center myself and pull energy back into my body. When we are not present it is easier to “spin” and feel out of control. Any small object that you can associate with being in the moment will work wonders!
